Why You Shouldn't Be Afraid to Try Barre, Even as a Beginner

As I sauntered into my first-ever barre workout at the Youpila Studio in Hamburg, I couldn’t help but feel like a fish out of water. I mean, what kind of workout involves a ballet barre and tiny pulses that make your legs feel like they’re made of jelly? Nevertheless, I was ready to give it a go and see if I could keep up with the lithe, Lululemon-clad ladies I kept seeing on instagram.

Spoiler alert: I couldn’t.

But what I lacked in grace and poise, I made up for in sheer determination and a healthy sense of humour. And as I stumbled out of the studio at the end of the class, legs shaking like a leaf in a hurricane, I knew I’d found my new favourite form of torture… erm, I mean exercise.

To my surprise, the group of women gathered around the barre was far from the stereotype of lithe models I had in my head. Instead, I was greeted by a super intimate and welcoming group of women of all ages, shapes, and sizes. There were mothers, young professionals, and everything in between. As I nervously took my place at the barre, I felt a pang of insecurity about my mum tum and slightly frumpy posture. But as soon as the class began, I was swept up in the supportive atmosphere of the studio. I felt like part of a community, rather than an outsider trying to keep up with the cool kids.

What is Barre? Discovering the low-impact, full-body workout

For the uninitiated, barre is a workout that combines elements of ballet, Pilates, and strength training. It takes place at a ballet barre (hence the name), and typically involves small, isometric movements that target specific muscle groups. Think tiny pulses and micro-movements that make even the tiniest muscles burn like fire. While barre workouts vary from studio to studio, they often include a mix of cardio and strength training exercises, as well as stretching and toning movements.

One of the great things about barre is that it’s a low-impact workout, which means it’s easy on your joints while still providing a challenging full-body workout. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a newbie to fitness, barre is a great way to build strength, increase flexibility, and get a full-body burn.

Why barre is the perfect workout for busy moms: benefits and advantages explained

Low-impact workout:
Barre is a great choice for mums who want to stay active without putting too much stress on their joints. The small, isometric movements of barre are gentle on the body but still provide a challenging workout.

Full-body workout:
Barre workouts target all major muscle groups, including the core, arms, and legs. This makes it a great choice for mums who want to get a comprehensive workout in a short amount of time.

Builds strength and flexibility:
Barre exercises focus on building strength and flexibility simultaneously. This can help mums improve their posture, reduce the risk of injury, and feel more confident in their bodies.

Helps with balance and stability:
Many barre exercises are done standing at the ballet barre, which can help improve balance and stability. This is particularly important for mums who may be carrying children or pushing strollers.

Time-efficient:
Barre workouts are typically 45-60 minutes long, making them a great choice for busy mums who don’t have a lot of time to spare.

Great for mental health:
Barre classes often incorporate elements of mindfulness and relaxation, which can be great for mums who are dealing with stress and anxiety. Additionally, the supportive and community-oriented atmosphere of barre classes can be a great way to meet other mums and build social connections.

Barre instructors at Youpila Studios are simply brilliant

I simply have to give a shout out to the instructor who led my barre lesson at Youpila Studios – she was absolutely brilliant! Not only did she ensure that every movement was executed with proper form and technique, but she also created a fun and dynamic atmosphere that made the class fly by. Her playlist was spot on, perfectly matching the rhythm of the movements, and her energy was infectious – I found myself pushing harder than I ever thought possible!

What really stood out, though, was how attentive she was to each person in the class. She noticed when someone was struggling and offered tips and modifications to help them get the most out of the workout. I left feeling like I had learned a lot and had a proper enjoyable experience. It’s clear that the instructors at Youpila Studios are top-notch and dedicated to helping their students achieve their fitness goals.
